Ahmed served as the editor of Next, an award-winning publication in Nigeria, where she managed a newsroom of about 120 staff and 30 stringers, shaping the editorial direction of the organization until it ceased print publication in September 2011. In 2011, she moderated Nigeria's presidential election debate live on national television. Three years later, she co-created and hosted Straight
Talk,
an interview program that engages Nigeria's leaders on important issues. Notable guests included Ibrahim Babangida, Babatunde Fashola, and Oby Ezekwesili.
In 2017, Ahmed founded Daria Media Ltd to promote public service journalism, and in 2020, she launched RadioNow 95.3FM. She is also a member of the board of trustees for the Premium Times Centre for Investigative Journalism.
Currently, Ahmed serves on the judging panel for the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism and is involved with the Promasidor Quill Awards. She is a member of the Nigerian Guild of Editors and the Nigerian Institute of Directors.
